RAIN Vs Rain!!!!!!!!

Rain, rain, go away,
Come again another day.
Rain, rain, go away.
Come again some other day.
Little Johnny wants to play,
In the meadow by the hay.
Rain, rain, go to Spain,
Never show your face again.
When in the kindergarten years I was made to mug the above lines & then basked in the glory of a missionary school education while reciting them to strangers to the delight of my parents (a failed attempt to shade my vernacular background) i never once wondered why didnt little johnny wanna play in the rain. Back home lil Jatin, big Janardhan, fat Jyoti & me all played in the rain. Sometimes getting dirty in the omni-present Bombay puddles ( this was around the time when puddles were still puddles but not all encompassing floods of sewage) sometimes getting all dressed up in electric blue raincoats & red gum boots & occassionally the thrill of reaching school to a undamped surprise that its a “rainyday – holiday” : the singsong would echo forever….yeah the rain was good…… there was a particular time of the year when it rained ( the Monsoon climate – specific to Indian subcontinent we were taught …..the southwest monsoon winds…the himalayas ….the vicinity to the equator.etc.etc….) and most of India depends on it. For a primarily agricultural economy & almost similar society we have a whopping 70% irrigation done by the position of the subcontinent rather than anyone else. Yeah India mercilessly depends on the rains, the country waits in a nail biting wake for the monsoons to relieve that unberable summer …..but then the rain-god ( yeah we have gods for everything ) smiles & the country rejoices the sporadic showers with a fresh spirit of intermingled hope and despair.
BACK to the FUTURE
I step out in a semi dazed state – out of my apartment in University City, St.Louis, USA…..its just October but the wind bites…..the grey stark sky doesnt help the fact that i had to skip my breakfast coz am late for school…It starts raining….and its not not at all the rain that i recognize this hurts ….this is not soft …..even the sound is foreign …..everyone seems to be ready for it……colorful umbrellas …. jackets with hoods …..everyone checks the forecast for the day….i was brought up to believe that one cant ever predict weather…..i start jogging to save self from the shivering pour….reminding to install a plugin into my browser for daily weather…..I suddenly remember Mark Haddon’s words ” I like the rain its like silence but not empty!” ….. this rain is not empty but the sound of this rain is not as musical as I am used ….this is the rain that has to be enjoyed sittin inside looking across a huge glass wall……Oops i pushed my foot in a puddle ….the water is cold….i start running….. mebbe the water will ooze out … it doesnt …. the “keep-to-your-right” doesnt bother me…the “all-the-currency-looks-the-same” i dont care…..the concept of “too-much-light” is also ok……so is “world stops for the weekend” but this is toughest to get used ….
deviation from somthin thats almost congenital is tough to undergo….even difficult to find out whats wrong…..finally reach the my department buidling…i step in and my soaked shoe squeaks like a toddler’s first shoe….
as i slump into a chair in the back of the classroom its back to stuff that is in congruence to my subconcious
” Before I start this lecture, I would like to tell you that most of you have performed miserably in the mid-term and that you should start working on the project if you wish to get it graded in this semester ” says my prof…. i am confused was he sarcastic or has he extened the date…….
